Several weeks ago i had a problem with one of the lower frost proof hydrants.
Turn off hot water gravity fed system.
The hot water taps will be fed from the tank in the loft which flows by gravity down to the hot water cylinder and forces hot water out to the hot water taps.
I used a faucet connector and shut off valve on it.
Gravity fed water systems if you ve got a gravity feed heating water supply system which involves a tank usually in the loft or somewhere up high and a hot water cylinder you ll find that even with the incoming mains off the tank in the loft will still supply water to the hot taps and sometimes water to the cold in the bathroom and toilet.
Thus stopping the cold water going in at the bottom prevents the hot water from being pushed out at the top.
I do plan on fitting isolating valves so the job will be easier in future.
It sounds like such a simple theory too.
This obviously means that even if you turn off the cold supply the hot water cylinder will still be full of water.
Gravity fed water pressure system.
Came up to house about 1 hour later and top of my water filter original was cracked and water spewing and had flooded my basement.
Tried to turn on it was hard then dirty water.
At this point everything should be hooked up for your gravity fed water system.
This is a very old gravity fed system with just a hot water tank and the cold one in the loft no isolating valves for taps etc.
Long before there were complicated electric pump systems for rural properties there was gravity.
Have you got poor gravity fed water pressure not sure if you need an emergency plumber or if it s something to do with the hot water storage tank martin smith explains everything you need to know when it comes to the pressure of water when it comes to the height of your hot water storage tank.
If power is a problem gravity may be your best bet for a reliable water supply.
Our gravity water system spring fed has worked really well for 24 years.
Ask me how.
How do i turn stop the hot water flowing.
Since this is only going to feed the cold water tap on the faucet.
Some systems also feed cold water to bathroom cold taps and the toilet cistern so the only mains water is going to the cold tap in the kitchen.
And today in many parts of new zealand where access to power is uneconomic or impossible gravity fed water systems are still used to keep water flowing to troughs and homes.
Hot water comes out of the top of the cylinder due to gravity acting on the cold water in the cistern in the loft.
